Interim To Fill In For Principal On Maternity Leave

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Erin Brown, an assistant principal at Beverly High School, will take over when Flewelling begins her maternity leave in late January and stay until she returns in April.

“I think you will find her very approachable and really good with kids, and I’m sure she will be welcomed to North Beverly,” Superintendent James Hayes wrote in a letter sent home to parents this week, “Her knowledge and friendly demeanor will go a long way in helping the school through the period of Jenne’s leave.”

Brown, a resident of Lynnfield, has been working in Beverly Public Schools for three years and has been leading curriculum development and instructional change.

She started her career in special education and has been a school administrator for the past eight years at both the middle and high school levels.

“Erin will soon begin participation in meetings with other elementary principals so that she is prepared to continue leadership of district initiatives,” Hayes said. “Together, they will enable North Beverly to continue to deliver high-quality education and to move forward in establishing a new school culture.”

Town Launches Call To Shop Local

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Businesses are fighting back against the economic crisis with a new campaign to encourage shoppers to support Matlock traders.

After a difficult year for businesses in the town, shopkeepers hope the festive spirit will boost trade and remind residents what is on offer on their doorsteps.

“We can get everything we want in Matlock. I think it is a great place to be and we should all be very positive about what is on offer here.”

A Festive Focus event, which is starting during the Victorian Christmas weekend, will feature a shop window dressing competition.

Mike Blair, owner of Peli Deli, said: “I think it is more important than it has ever been to support local business, especially for Matlock.

“There seems to be a really good key core of high quality products that are stocked by passionate people.”

“Also there is the local, friendly service which very often can be a lot better then you would find in the cities.

“I think what we have got to do, personally, is make our shops look brighter and more inviting to welcome people and give them a great service. Not just that little bit extra at Christmas, but all year round.”

Residents can get involved with the campaign by designing a Shop Local logo.

Entries should be sent before the end of November to Catherine Rawas at the town council in the Imperial Rooms or by emailing CatherineR@matlock.gov.uk. The winning designer will be given a presentation version of the final logo by Matlock mayor Cate Hopkinson.

Local Rowers Find Solo Success

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Four local rowers took gold medals at the Head of the South regatta in Augusta, Ga., on Saturday, while Hillary Schmidt of Berkeley Prep and Kiersten DeHaven of the Academy of the Holy Names took gold in the junior double sculls.

Taylor Athan, who rows for Plant High, won the junior single sculls, while Schmidt won the junior lightweight sculls and DeHaven the junior novice sculls. On the boys side, Raphael Blanco from Berkeley Prep won the junior novice sculls.

“They all performed very well, and I couldn’t be happier,” Coach Call Collins said. Collins has coached all four of the rowers privately, to add to the work they do with their schools. With no bay area program attending the Head of the South in its own right, Collins led the group in Augusta. Collins said she was pleased with the races each had completed, with all four winning being a nice by-product of their performances.

“It’s not really about wins,” Collins said. “It’s always good if that happens, but what’s more important is that they perform to the best of their abilities, and that’s how I explain it to them.”

Collins, an accomplished rower in her own right, began coaching junior rowers when she coached Plant High’s program for a spring season a number of years ago, and while she didn’t have the time due to family commitments to continue, the idea of coaching junior rowers appealed to her.

As a result, she began instructing individual rowers. Athan was the first of her current group to join her, three years ago, as she learned to row as a 13-year-old. Athan is a part of the Panthers’ varsity 8, but also has found success as a sculler.

Another in Collins’ group is Hillsborough standout Katie Burke, who didn’t compete in Augusta after a heavy fall schedule. Among her previous students, Collins had two scholastics state champions in Tampa Catholic’s Shannon Hoffman, who earned a scholarship to Wisconsin last year, and Berkeley Prep’s Steven Cutler, who is now at Princeton.
