New look

That’s an easy question for most Iowans. Cardinal is one of the school colors. The cardinal mascot that struts around at football games is called Cy, short for Cyclones.

That makes sense to fans in Iowa, but for prospective students (read that recruitable athletes) in California, Texas or Florida, the cardinal is confusing.

So says market research Iowa State’s athletic department used to justify the new identity rolled out last week.

More likely, the tradition-strapped Cyclone football team is seeking a winning look. That was the case at the University of Iowa until 1978 when Hayden Fry introduced the iconic Tiger Hawk. Fry’s winning record and winning personality accompanied the logo and now it and the university are inseparable.

Here’s risky advice coming from the newspaper that gave Iowa State’s chief rival its nickname, but we hope victories aplenty come with the new look and it sticks around.
