Another aggravated assault over the weekend has landed a 19-year-old Boise man behind bars.

Boise Police were called to Longmont Avenue after a man and woman say a man entered their residence, and battered them both.

The male victim was taken to a hospital with several facial injuries that looked serious, but were not life threatening.

Witnesses say the suspect threw a brick at the male victim’s vehicle as he ran from the house.

Cate has been charged with aggravated battery, burglary, malicious injury to property, stalking and battery.

Gasland gets robbed again

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By JOHN MANGALONZO

jmangalonzojmangalonzo

One week after two men were charged in connection with a series of armed robberies last year, Burlington Police detectives are back scouring the streets looking for a man who robbed a convenience store late Wednesday night.

Though well-lit at night, Gasland at 1204 N. Eighth St. has again become the center of a police investigation involving an unidentified man, possibly with a gun, who disappeared in the cover of darkness.

This time, the robbery took place inside the store as compared to last year’s incidents reported to have occurred in the store’s parking lot.

Police said a black man, described as 5 feet and 5 inches tall, weighing approximately 180 pounds and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, came in the store at 9:31 p.m. Wednesday and demanded money from the clerk.

It was not clear whether the suspect yielded a gun, but police said the clerk was led to believe the suspect had a weapon.

Sgt. Adam Schaefer said after a few minutes, the suspect left the store with an undisclosed amount of money.

The clerk, who was not injured, did not see if the suspect left on foot or in a car.

A store employee who declined to be identified said the clerk who was on duty the night of the robbery was shaken by the ordeal and took time off. The clerk had told her, who was not at the store the night of the burglary, the suspect reached over the counter and went for the cash register.

“He just gave him what he wanted,” the employee said. “Then the man (suspect) left in a hurry. It was just a matter of a few minutes.”

Last week, prosecutors charged 37-year-old Leroy Mallet Williams of Chicago and 39-year-old Phillip Dwayne Jones for the separate robberies that took place in the store’s parking lot as well as other robberies in the city last year.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the incident to call the police department at (319) 753-8366 or Crime Stoppers at (319) 753-6835.

Windshield bandit case gets cracked

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

jmangalonzojmangalonzo

Kylan Jacob Burrell didn’t want a ticket for driving his car with a cracked windshield.

However, authorities said the Burlington man has been charged with third-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief because of accusations that Burrell broke into a local garage/auto parts store and stole a replacement windshield.

Burrell, 18, has pleaded not guilty on the charges and is set to stand trial on May 6.

Authorities also have filed a complaint accusing Burrell’s alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Chris Bowman, also of Burlington, with third-degree burglary and interference with official acts.

A combination of eye witness statements and shoe impressions left at the scene of the Feb. 15 burglary, Mike’s Auto Parts, 3881 Summer St., led Des Moines County Sheriff’s detectives to the suspects.

Detectives contend Burrell climbed a fence at the business and tried to steal a windshield from a truck.

Unsuccessful, detectives said Burrell went to work on another truck in the lot and managed to disengage it from its windshield, causing extensive damage.

Detectives found shoe impressions on the hoods of the two trucks, along with tire impressions near the business.

Working with information gathered during the investigation, detectives went to Burrell’s home in the 500 block of Adams Street where they found a recently removed cracked windshield on the driveway.

Similar tire and shoe prints found at the scene of the crime were discovered near the auto glass, authorities said in a report.

Bowman told investigators he went with Burrell to the auto parts store during business hours, but denied returning when the business was closed and helping Burrell in the burglary.

Burrell, on the other hand, told authorities he went to Mike’s Auto Parts at 2 a.m., and damaged the trucks while taking the windshield.

Burrell said he handed the windshield to Bowman, who was waiting on the other side of the fence.

When confronted with that information, Bowman, according to the complaint, affirmed his participation and said he had lied to detectives the first time he was interviewed.

Woman takes marshal vehicle, later captured

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids woman wanted for stealing a U.S. marshal’s vehicle while handcuffed has been captured.

Officials said 19-year-old Candace Lint was arrested Thursday and was being held at Linn County Jail without bond.

Lint was placed in the back seat of a patrol vehicle Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids after being charged with violating probation from burglary and assault charges. Officials said two deputy marshals then began questioning three men who were with Lint. That’s when the woman slipped into the driver’s seat and escaped.

Authorities found the vehicle 10 blocks away but Lint was not with it.

At about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Lint was found with a man believed to be her boyfriend.

Central Iowa men caught in Ecstasy bust

DES MOINES — Two men face drug charges after authorities seized more than 9,000 Ecstasy pills.

Chang Ming Lin, 23, of West Des Moines and Mark Claude Davis, 24, of Des Moines were charged with possession with intent to distribute MDMA/Ecstasy. The arrests came after the state Division of Narcotics Enforcement executed two search warrants Monday.

In the first search of Lin’s home, Ecstasy tablets and $18,000 in cash were seized, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety. A search at Davis’ home yielded two hand guns and one ounce of methamphetamine.

The Mid-Iowa Narcotic Enforcement Task Force, Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Iowa State Patrol Tactical Team assisted in the investigation, the release said.

Officials said the drugs had an estimated street value of more than $63,000.

DES MOINES — Leonard Boswell is officially seeking re-election to Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District.

The Democrat, who is serving his sixth term, filed for re-election Thursday. He is facing a primary challenge from former state Rep. Ed Fallon, a Democrat from Des Moines.

The 74-year-old Boswell initially had pledged to serve only four terms. But he recently said he plans to stay in Washington awhile longer because he hasn’t accomplished all his goals.

Boswell touts his experience in the U.S. House addressing issues such as education, college costs and health care.

The 3rd District covers Polk County in central Iowa and 11 surrounding counties.

Meyers to run for congressional seat

DES MOINES — Democrat William J. Meyers has announced he will run for the congressional seat held by Republican Tom Latham.

Meyers, a Marine veteran from rural Humboldt County, officially entered the race Thursday for the 4th Congressional District, which covers much of central and northern Iowa.

Meyers says he suffered a severe back injury while in the military, and his struggles with the federal government over disability claims motivated him to seek office.

Kurt Meyer of St. Ansgar also has filed to run for the Democratic nomination.

Judge denies man’s request for release or reduced bond

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By JOHN MANGALONZO

jmangalonzojmangalonzo

Twenty-year-old Benjamin Raymond Crabb likely will stay in jail while his robbery case reaches a final disposition, unless he can come up with $75,000 cash or surety to post his bond.

Des Moines County prosecutor Tyron Rogers on Monday said Crabb has motivation to run and not appear in court because of the seriousness of the charges lodged against him — two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of first-degree burglary — in connection with his alleged involvement in the December attempted robbery and shooting of another man in rural Des Moines County.

During a bond review hearing Monday, Rogers resisted Crabb’s efforts to have a judge release him on his own recognizance or reduce his $100,000 bond by half together with any other conditions “the court deems appropriate,” citing the alleged crime was committed two months after Crabb was paroled from prison. Crabb was serving time on two 2006 burglary convictions and a 2007 escape.

District Court Judge Cynthia Danielson agreed.

“The court concludes that the defendant’s alleged commission of these crimes while on parole reflects that the defendant’s release on less than the most stringent bond would fail to reasonably assure the defendant’s appearance,” Danielson wrote in her ruling.

However, based on the Iowa Supreme Court bond schedule, Danielson set the amount at $25,000 for each count.

Crabb’s court-appointed attorney, James Carter, said his client has been a Burlington resident all his life with strong family ties in the community.

Crabb’s parents, Jason And Cynnamon Crabb, have offered to let their son stay with them, if he is released from jail, Carter told Danielson.

The persistence in Benjamin Crabb’s corner to try to get a judge to agree with them only met with a resounding opposition from the prosecutor, Rogers, who said the charges against the 20-year-old man carry at least 25 years in prison for each count, if convicted. This, he said, is an additional motivation for Benjamin Crabb not to appear in proceedings.

Prosecutors say Benjamin Crabb, along with Andrew Graham Trousil-Bagan, 20, of Fort Madison and Marquis Rashad Jones, 17, of Burlington, went to the home of Timothy Weyls Jr., 20, for a robbery Dec. 12.

According to investigators, Crabb went to Weyls’ bedroom and started hitting him with a .38 caliber handgun. The gun accidentally went off, hitting Weyls in his right arm.

Two years ago in April, Burlington police officers were investigating a burglary at the First Christian Church, 1221 Park St., when a man, later identified as Benjamin Crabb, suspiciously walked by the scene carrying an orange bag.

Detectives questioned the young man, who in turn said he was the one who broke into the church through an unlocked window that leads to the kitchen.

Once inside the church, Crabb told detectives he found a set of keys to the church’s garage, where he got some tools. He said he used the tool to force his way into several of the offices inside the church building where he found a small amount of money, before setting off the alarm.

Benjamin Crabb was granted a deferred judgment in June for that burglary and was placed on probation for three years.

However, according to court documents, one month after getting probation, Benjamin Crabb was arrested for breaking into his grandparent’s home in the 1100 block of Lynwood Drive and taking four collectible $5 bills.

In November that year, Benjamin Crabb was handed a five-year suspended sentence for that case. He was placed on probation for five years.

In the meantime, the deferred judgment handed to him for the church burglary was continued but with an additional probation condition of a year in the Burlington Men’s Residential Facility.

After several probation violation complaints involving drugs, disorderly conduct in the facility and escape, his deferred judgment and suspended sentence were revoked in April of last year, and he was ordered to serve five years in prison for each burglary as well as five years for escape.

He was granted parole in October, according to prison release papers filed in district court.

Benjamin Crabb’s robbery trial is set to begin April 8.

Public toilet peeper has sentence quashed

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Unemployed Porirua man Richard Alan Ford, 26, was last November sentenced to two years, three months%26#39; prison on two charges of attempting to make intimate visual recordings and one charge of burglary.
Ford went into a cubicle in the women%26#39;s toilets at the BNZ centre food court on December 21, 2006 - six weeks after being released from prison for similar offending.
A number of women used the toilet in the next cubicle and Ford allegedly stood on the toilet seat so he could look over and watch them.
The women were unaware they were being watched until one saw a camera flash and alerted building security.
Ford%26#39;s lawyer appealed to the Court of Appeal, saying the sentence was inappropriate and manifestly excessive.
The court said in its decision it accepted Ford had a %26quot;deplorable record%26quot;.
%26quot;He has persistently offended in ways that are a gross invasion of the privacy of others,%26quot; it said.
It was %26quot;not without some distinct hesitation%26quot; that the court quashed the sentence in favour of eight months%26#39; home detention, saying it would allow Ford to get help.
%26quot;It may be said that this is taking something of a risk with this man. That is undoubtedly true but it is not the one the court would be prepared to entertain without some realistic prospects of success.%26quot;

anyone else was involved,” Grimshaw said.

“We want to give the team at the Methodist church plenty of

before we make any more arrests,” he added.

In addition, Ravelin was arrested Wednesday for first鈥揹egree

burglary and second鈥揹egree arson for allegedly breaking into the nearby

First Presbyterian Church, then setting a small fire inside the church

sanctuary, which caused no damage to the church.

Police learned of the break鈥搃n at 3:30 a.m. after a motion

alarm went off. Officers arrived at the scene at 3:50 a.m. and found

the rear entrance from the alley unsecured.

Food items were taken during the burglary, according to a Presbyterian church official.

Grimshaw declined to speculate on a motive.

Ravelin became a suspect in the Methodist church fire following

his arrest at 4:15 a.m. Sunday at Hardee’s at 605 S. 10th St. in

Burlington.

According to court records, Des Moines County Sheriff’s

deputies were dispatched to Hardee’s after a security alarm was

activated.

At the scene, deputies observed Ravelin exiting a door near the drive鈥搕hrough window carrying a plastic sack and a garbage bag.

The sack was from Hy鈥揤ee and contained a two鈥搇iter bottle of

soda and potato chips, authorities said. Inside the garbage bag,

deputies found “a block of cheese, a roast, eight onions and a package

of tortilla shells,” according to court records.

Police say Ravelin admitted to entering the restaurant without

permission through a door that was propped open. He was arrested for

third鈥揹egree burglary.

Later that day, Ravelin was released on his own recognizance pending a future court appearance.

On Wednesday, Ravelin returned to the Des Moines County jail where he is being held on $78,000 bond.

“He became a person of interest due to the timing of the

Hardee’s burglary,” Grimshaw said. “He didn’t have accelerants on him

when he was arrested.”

The cause of the Methodist church fire remained undetermined

Wednesday as investigators began sorting through the charred rubble.

“We will hopefully have a good idea within the next few days on

the origin of the fire,” said Rob Elder of the federal Bureau of

Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Burlington firefighters were dispatched at 2:41 a.m. Sunday to

the Methodist church after receiving a call that smoke and heat

detectors had been activated in the building.

At the scene, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames

on the first floor and in the basement of the building, according to

fire officials.

It took about five hours to contain the blaze that swept through the church at 421 Washington St. in downtown Burlington.

The church was built in 1889 out of purplish Jasper granite. The sanctuary was extensively remodeled in 2000.

The church may have been built too well, according to investigators.

“We got inside the church early this morning and we continue to

move debris. The challenge is that the church was very well constructed

and there are large timber beams that have fallen down inside the

church,” Elder said.

Investigators will return to the fire scene this morning. The

street outside the Methodist church, Washington Street from Fourth and

Fifth streets, will remain closed until the fire investigation is

concluded.

The Presbyterian church was reopened to parishioners Wednesday with access through a rear entrance.

Ravelin is scheduled to make an initial appearance this morning in Des Moines County Associate Court.

A search of Iowa Courts online showed Ravelin has only been

convicted of traffic offenses. Police declined to comment whether

Ravelin had a criminal record in another state.

Maj. Dan Luttenegger, acting Burlington police chief, commended

federal, state and local law enforcement officials for Ravelin’s

arrest.

“Nothing substitutes teamwork when working a case of this magnitude and that is evident with today’s swift arrest,” he said.
