Panathinaikos Make Last 16

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Giorgos Karagounis’ gift of a goal proved the difference as manager Henk Ten Cate got his birthday wish of a victory in front of a packed home crowd.

Panathinaikos were always in control of the Greek-Cypriot clash and they should have added more than the one goal at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.

Anorthosis will rue a golden opportunity to take the lead in the first half as Temuri Ketsbaia’s side finish bottom of the group and miss out on a Uefa Cup spot to add insult to injury.

Olympiakos Escape With Derby Draw

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

In what was a typically tense derby clash, Panathinaikos striker Vangelis Mantzios missed the best chance of the match when he saw his second-half effort blocked from point-blank range by veteran Greece ‘keeper Antonis Nikpoloidis.

Meanwhile, Vasilis Torosidis missed Olympiakos’ only clear-cut opportunity when he saw his first-half effort blocked on the line by Alexandros Tziolis, during what was an otherwise disjointed display by Ernesto Valverde’s men, who were fortunte to have escaped the Olympic Stadium with a point.

Panathinaikos Earn Crucial Victory

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

The win eases the mounting pressure on manager Henk Ten Cate, whose side had gone on a three-match winless streak leading up to the clash at the Nea Smyrni, held to consecutive 2-2 draws at home to Werder Bremen and Iraklis, before being handed an embarrassing defeat by Ergotelis on Wednesday.

Eight changes were made to the side that collapsed to that 3-2 defeat at the OAKA Spiros Louis Stadium in mid-week, with the Dutchman handing a starting place to teenager Sotiris Ninis whilst benching star striker Dimitris Salpiggidis.

Joining the young prodigy on the pitch were the likes of Fabian Estoyanoff and Alvaro Recoba, both of whom started their third consecutive match for Panionios after inspiring their new side to recent victories over Aris and Ergotelis.

But it was Panathinaikos veteran Giannis Goumas who stole the limelight from the South American duo, coming off the bench as a second-half substitute to head home a superb winner for his side with six minutes of normal time remaining.
